Gas Safety On Holiday, Home and Abroad
This is not to be taken lightly. Gas safety on holiday, either in the UK, or abroad, should not be dismissed without some thought as to what could happen.
Just because you are on holiday, does not make carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, or explosions from faulty gas appliances any less likely. Indeed, there have a been a number of tragic deaths and injuries after holiday makers have been subjected to poor workmanship whilst enjoying a break.
Now, of course, in the first few hours of your holiday, you could demand to see the owner, or manager of your holiday home – whether it’s a rented house, villa, or part of a complex – and demand to see the relevant paperwork and certificates. But even if you could find someone willing to provide such information, then you have no idea on what standards an inspection from say a government authority is based. Not every country is so determined to rid themselves of the risk of dangerous gas appliances and not every country is blessed with such a scheme as the Safe Gas Register.
As an aside though, if you are travelling as part of a package holiday and are going to a resort, it would be worth, before parting with your money, just asking them about their safety standards at that location. British companies are obliged to look after their guests so most will have done checks already and satisfied themselves about the state of the accommodation. But should your travel company seem unwilling, or unable, to provide you with such reassurances on that front, choose a new company. If they can’t be bothered to help you with such questions, then you have to doubt their ability to look after you in the first place.
So how do you enjoy a gas safe holiday? There is one simple way to stay safe from the worse threat of all: the deadly carbon monoxide gas which is a silent killer. Even a small exposure could lead to serious injury.
Before you travel therefore, invest in a portable audible carbon monoxide alarm. Put this into your holiday accommodation and should the worse happen, it should shriek a high pitched warning alarm. Available for around £20 from many stores, it will give you peace of mind whilst in a property that you have no knowledge about.
Play it safe, always.
