Weighing up the Pros and Cons of Taking out a Boiler Maintenance Service Contract
As has occurred in cases of excess fees for car insurance, many UK householders have formed the possibly mistaken opinion that it may be cheaper in the long run to just pay for the repairs if their home boiler suddenly goes on the blink. They have reached the likely incorrect conclusion that the cash is better in their pockets than in the hands of the insurance companies; and should they suffer a breakdown, then they will call out a service engineer.
As with any form of non-compulsory insurance, the decision to take out a cover insurance is purely in the hands of the householder. Interestingly enough, according to a recent survey carried out by Which UK, around 70% of the participants in the survey who had signed up for boiler maintenance said that the principal driving force behind their decision was quite simply peace of mind. The survey also showed that only around a third of those taking part gave value for money as their key reason for taking out a boiler maintenance service contract.
Boiler maintenance service contracts are fairly straightforward. You pay a monthly fee and, in the event of a breakdown, the service provider of your choice will dispatch an engineer and more than likely within 24 hours to analyse and repair the problem. There are some UK companies, among them the appropriately named Reactfast, who claim that they will to respond to a call out within a two-hour time frame. And while none of the contractors examined by Which UK would give a written guarantee of a two-hour call out response, they did point out that priority is given to the elderly, and families with young children being second on the list.
A number of boiler maintenance service contracts also can be tailored to take in a variety of extra options such as central heating repairs, plumbing and drains, and even domestic electrical wiring. Obviously the extent of the coverage determines the size of the monthly fees.
Which UK recommends that if householders decide to go ahead and take out a boiler maintenance service contract they should opt for one that includes an annual service or maintenance inspection. There are some policies that include the inspection as standard while there are those who include it as an optional extra. This is a very important feature of any contract, that an annual inspection should be carried out, whether boiler breakdown cover is taken out or not.
There are several large insurance companies who offer a limited form of boiler breakdown insurance as part of your house insurance, which is difficult to turn down. There are others who offer the service as an optional extra. In either case, Which UK have ascertained that the cover provided is significantly less than that provided by a specialist boiler maintenance service contract.
