Buy a New Washing Machine and Save Money
At one time, the only thing that front-loading washing machines had going for them was that they were a little more stylish than their top loading counterparts. However, with the UK public having to become much more energy conscious, it has been discovered that over the long term, front loading machines will be much friendlier to the bank balance, as well as to the environment. Add to that the fact that front loaders are easier to work with and take up little space, especially when operated in conjunction with a tumbler dryer, this means that investing in a front loader is gradually creeping up the shopping list of many UK families.
It is difficult to escape the advantages of front loaders in terms of energy savings alone, but they also provide a long list of additional features that make them an excellent long-term investment. It is not so well known, but front loading washing machines use only around half the water of conventional top loaders. Not only that, but the majority of front loaders don't require that all of the wash water used to be heated, resulting in considerable energy savings, as well as saving much more on that other fast-disappearing commodity: water.
As the manufacturers of domestic electrical equipment join in the battle to save energy, the most up-to-date washing machines come with an integral heating element capable of being thermostatically activated in a process similar to that employed in the domestic dishwasher. The process is designed to heat water in the machine higher than the temperature that a standard household water heater can produce. This feature comes especially in handy for such important tasks such as sanitising baby wear or sheets and pillowcases.
Another major advantage of front loading washing machines is that the drum spins on a horizontal axis rather than a vertical one. What normally happens with top-loading washing machines is that they swish the articles being cleaned back and forth during the wash cycle. With front loaders, they operate by dipping articles of clothing into water repeatedly. Tests indicate that this type of washing action cleans clothes better and more gently. Front loaders also use high-speed rinse and water-extraction cycles -- some can spin the drum at 1,400 rpm, which yields more thorough removal of water and soap residue whilst saving considerably on energy.
