Choosing the Best Boiler

Choosing a boiler to heat your home can be stressful and time-consuming, not to mention expensive. After all, you want to get the boiler that will suit you and your family to a tee. However, making the best decision is impossible if you’re not armed with the right knowledge. And with so many options available to you, it can be easy to make the wrong decision. Luckily for you, this article is full of all the information you need to know on the different types of boilers available – and, hopefully, it will make the process of choosing a boiler straightforward.

1. Combi boilers

Combi boilers are the most popular type of boiler in the UK, and there are quite a few reasons for this. First of all, the combi boiler is efficient. This is because it only heats hot water when you need it (such as when you turn the hot tap on). As a result, energy isn’t wasted making sure you’ve got hot water stored in a tank somewhere in the loft.

This brings me to my next point – combi boilers don’t even need a tank in the first place. Because it’s not necessary to store heated water, you don’t need a big, chunky hot water tank in the loft of the airing cupboard. These efficient systems take water straight from the mains supply, so they are the ultimate space-saving solution. This is perfect for one-bedroom flats, city apartments... any type of house where you just want a bit of extra space.

2. System boilers

System boilers produce hot water and heat for your home, acting as a two-in-one central heating device. System boilers do require a hot water tank, so they’re not quite as space-conscious as combi boilers, but they don’t take up as much space as other boilers do. System boilers are ideal for families or big houses where there is a high demand for hot water, as the use of a hot water tank means that there is always a reservoir of hot water waiting to be used.

3. Heat-only boilers

Heat-only boilers, like system boilers, provide both a hot water supply and a central heating system for your home. They are very convenient and ideal for larger homes, as they ensure that hot water can be available from at least two taps at a time. However, this does come at a cost, as they require a hot water tank in the loft, and a cold water tank which is used to replenish the boiler’s other tank when needed. Please bear in mind that heat-only boilers are sometimes referred to as open-vent boilers as you go on the hunt for a new system.
