Never Compare your Fridge to your Cocker Spaniel
Compared to some of the other countries in the World, Britons are still tremendous animal lovers. No matter how tough times are, they find it hard to turn their back on a sick or homeless animal and will dig deep to find that extra few pence of pounds to prevent a pet from unnecessary suffering.
But would we do the same to our beloved domestic appliances? Like dogs or cats, fridges and cookers have a life expectancy, and it would be foolish to allow yourself to suffer just because you have become emotionally attached to your washing machine.
Many people, especially those who made these major purchases setting up home for the first time, can find it difficult to part with them, even when they become more trouble than they are worth. There are those who become appliance insurance slaves who begin to pay exorbitant insurance fees to patch up their machines rather than replace them. Unlike cars, insurance premiums for domestic appliances increase the older the machine is, especially if there have been claims on the insurance before, and the insurer will be forced to pay a larger percentage of the repair every time that it hits the repair shop.
As we may be aware, blind sentiment can be a very expensive foible, and those UK households that insist on hanging on to their electrical appliances are missing out, not only financially, but also in all the latest technological developments going on in the field of domestic appliances.
It is reasonable to expect a life span of between ten to fifteen years for a reasonable quality domestic appliance that will be in normal use during that period. After that time their performance will generally start to dwindle.
Its only when people replace a domestic appliance, sometimes when they have no option, do they realise what an easier life they could have had if they had replaced it earlier.
So why draw out the agony for yourself and your domestic appliances. Don't let loyalty blind to your trusted tumbler dried blind you. Take a look around and you will see that there are some wonderful appliances out there and the costs involved in upgrading to them are surprisingly low. Instead of a puffing, banging and creaking monster you will have a sleek, slim line new model to grace your kitchen.
