Condensing boilers prove themselves in the UK's worst cold spell
Whoever it was that used that phrase" when the going gets tough the tough get going" probably wasn't referring to condensing boilers. However this latest innovation in home heating has really proved itself during the exceptional demands to produce round the clock heat that this recent extreme cold snap has brought upon the British Isles.
Boasting ninety percent efficiency levels it can be no wonder that condensing
Boilers are now generally recognized as being the number one boiler to have at your call under these most testing of conditions weather wise. The traditional boiler systems that were in use before condensing boilers came on the scene could only provide between 65 to 70 percent efficiency at best.
The dramatic improvement in heat generation that a condensing boiler produces is due to the dual characteristic of improved heat production coupled with the ability to recover a much higher proportion of the heat created which would normally be lost in the conventional boiler.
Conventional boiler design leads to a higher heat proportion because the boiler is designed to release the boiling hot waste gases through its flue, while a condensing boiler-driven system has been designed to retain these gases which were once cast aside as waste. Instead they are retained in order to heat water that has cooled and been pushed through the central heating system and back to the boiler for reheating.
The "recycled" water remains at a moderate temperature and therefore takes considerably less time and energy from the burner to bring it back up to the maximum temperature. This is the key to making the operation of condensing boiler more efficient.
Condensing boilers, by nature of their method of operation, utilise these oversized radiators for a new system, by allowing the cooled water to return to the boiler, thus maximizing the time spent in the condensing mode.
Statistics have shown that around four fifths of the heat produced by condensing boilers is re-cycled and used to heat water or for maximum operation of a central heating system.
While its always comforting to read the statistics, the proof of how efficient condensing boiler operated heating systems have been there for all to see for the last few days and weeks, and seem liable to make installing a condensing boilers the number one priority for UK homeowners.
