Don't find yourself in the dark this winter
With conditions in the UK being as they are at present and with no guarantee that the next few months won't be equally as tough, every effort should be made to minimize the discomfort and inconvenience that extremes of weather can cause.
One of the most frightening experiences that any family or individual can go through on a freezing cold wintry night is to be caught up in a power cut, but with systems being pressed to the extreme it would be a truly optimistic person who would believe that it can't happen. The sensible approach is to assume that a power cut can happen and prepare accordingly.
The first step is to make sure that there are enough torches and battery powered lanterns around and ready for operation. That means that they should have fully charged batteries in them at all times and situated in a place or places where they can be easily accessed when the lights suddenly go out. Families who live in a two storey home (or more) should make sure that there is designated point on each storey where the torches are kept. The use of candles, much as they are romantic, should be avoided at all costs.
The first step after temporarily lighting has been established is to make your way to the fuse box to ascertain if the problem stems from something in your own home or is a localised one. If all the fuses are where they should be, then the problem lies with the local council, and there is not a lot to do except wait till they sort it out.
If there is a fuse or fuses that are in the "down" position, then the problem is in your home and will need to be attended to. If you can identify the area where the short circuit has come from, you might be able to affect a running repair. The easiest step is to remove each electrical plug from the socket and each time pushing the faulty fuse up to you isolate the problem and that will usually solve it. If that doesn't help, then it's time to call in an electrician and unless there is any need for any emergency call out, it should wait till daytime.
It goes without saying that the responsibility of ensuring that their electrical wiring and systems are in first class shape, not just during winter but all year round. Don't wait to be caught in the dark this winter, arrange for a professionally licensed electrician to check out your systems to make sure that everything is in order.
