Does it pay to take out domestic appliance insurance?
Let's be honest- we all like to go out and buy something new, and when it’s a sparkling and new-fangled domestic appliance, then the excitement is much more intense.
These days buying a new appliance has been much simpler thanks to the internet, where a lot of the foot slogging around the various stores have been largely eliminated thanks to comparison shopping and the possibility of making the purchase online with a lot of the cost savings that go with it.
Yet the human element still exits where people like to see what they are buying maybe get the chance to see the appliance in operation before they make that final decision. The only possible downside to the hands on way of buying is that the public has to deal with a salesperson, which it most cases is a very positive experience, but can sometimes can be a little harrowing.
That can happen if the sales staff has been trained not only to sell electric appliances but also to push domestic appliance insurance.
Having been convinced, or better still, have convinced yourself that this is exactly the appliance that you need, it is sometimes difficult to take that the sales staff will then spend even more time trying to convince you to take out insurance on the machine, even before you have got it home.
After all you know that any quality domestic appliance will come with at least a year's guarantee, and these days it is fairly common for a medium to top of the range appliance to come with a two or three year manufacturer's warranty, That's why even you are excited about your new "toy" you should be very restrained in committing yourself to guarantees, especially those offered by the shop which may be overpriced.
If, after the manufacturer's warranty has run out, the best idea is to get online and check out prices. You should also make sure that the prices you are looking at include labour costs, and not just parts, or vice versa. These days domestic appliances can last a lot longer than they used to, and it might be worth investing in breakdown insurance, bearing in mind that the price for insuring your appliances is liable to increase according to their age.
There are very few people who can allow themselves the luxury of an impulse purchase these days, so before taking the steps to purchase domestic appliance insurance, it has to be a wise decision to take the long term view.
