Every keep warm tactic is fair as winter descends
early on the UK
We all lived in hope that this winter wouldn't be as harsh and as difficult as last year's but early indications show that it might even be worse!
That means that the UK public will be faced with an even larger dilemma than they had to face last time around and that is how to keep warm without allowing our heating bills to get totally out of proportion.
It's only natural to expect that heating bills will go up during the winter as heating needs to go on with expectations that the real cold snap won't really kick in till after the New Year and last till the beginning of March.
However with the UK already in the grips of a major cold spell at the beginning of December, how is it possible not to fear that this cold spell might go on till the end of March or even April with heating on full blast. That kind of extra consumption will mean a dramatic increase in fuel bills as well as adding to the emissions of greenhouse gases with all of the damage that has caused to the climate.
That means that every UK household should be making up an emergency package to try and keep their energy costs under control while keeping themselves and their families warm at the same time. States of emergency can sound a bit frightening but they should be implemented with the purpose of maximizing energy while keeping costs under control.
One great way of conserving energy and retaining heat is to cover central heating or free standing radiators with tin foil that will reflect the heat back on to the radiator allowing it be burning energy for shorter time periods.
If you have an open fireplace in your own home, it can be used to start a pleasant log fire or using these new compressed "fire bricks" to create a nice and steady warm heat, you can even compress old newspapers to make your own logs that will provide lots of heat at next to nothing costs.
Burning wood or even paper is also very environmentally friendly
These ideas are only food for thought for those who want to keep their energy use under control. A little thought during these long cold winter nights will surely come up with some more.
