Don't let your Electric Bill Come Back and Bite you in the Summer
Just like a man who has crawled one hundred miles to reach an oasis in the middle of the Sahara Desert will never ask how much he will be charged for a glass of water, neither will the UK householder stop and think how much their electricity bill will be when the increasingly erratic local weather sends them into situations of extreme heat or cold.
And just like last winter was extremely cold, this summer has also brought some of the hottest days on record. So when the seat is lashing from your brow, it's only logical to find a way to cool down. The fact is that most UK homes don't have any form of air conditioning, so when the mercury starts to climb, the old fashioned and energy hungry alternative, the rotating fan is called into play.
Unlike a lot of countries where they expect the weather to be hot in the summer, in the UK it even seems unreasonable. But there is no escaping the fact that these blisteringly hot summer days or coming much more frequently and it only seems a matter of time before most UK families, and especially those in the South, will be adding installing an air conditioning system to their list of "need to buy".
In the meantime all kinds of short term solutions will need to be found and these tend to be expensive. Not only that but it makes it difficult if bot impossible to estimate heating bills in the summer. At one time and not so long ago, these factors didn't need to be taken into consideration. A homeowner who wanted to calculate their electricity bill for the summer had very little to be pressurised about. Long days and short nights meant that electricity consumption was a lot less, and the need to heat water was at a minimum, especially for those people who had the foresight to install a solar heating facility.
So when the heat waves come, while it be easy to say stay indoors, sometimes the heat becomes very hard to take, and that's when the portable fan or fans get pulled out. And when they do, the energy bills shoot up.
The unlike scenario exists that a lot of UK families will begin to consider the advantages of installing central heating before too long. It might be just in one room, but it will always be nice to know that it is there.
