Prepare yourself for a hearty electric bill this winter
Nobody likes to be the bearer of bad news, but meteorologists are positively queuing up to let the UK public know that this coming winter looks like being as severe as that of 2009/2010. The days when you can expect a one year on, one year off situation seem to be bound for the history books.
So with that fact in mind what can the UK public do to keep their energy bills in check so that they don't emerge for another winter with an electricity bill from hell. Those families who are reliant on electricity to provide all or part of their home heat will have to plan many times over how to keep their energy consumption to a minimum while keeping themselves and their loved ones warm.
This may seem a little stupid bit in order to save money on electricity to need to spend some first, That means making investments, with the first being one or a few programmable thermostats. These days' thermostats come in a very clean lined digital format, which are very easy to get to grips with. You can set up your digital thermostat or thermostats for different time's scales as well as different temperatures which can mean some real savings. A simple and enjoyable exercise is to compare your electricity bill before and after the era of thermostats and you will soon reach the conclusion that these thermostats were a wise investment indeed.
The next thing that should be looked at is home insulation. Home owners tend completely under estimate how much heat can be lost through improper insulation. A few hours work and another relatively small investment will prevent that warm air that you have spent a lot of money creating escaping and cold air coming in its place. In certain cases, installing a set of storm doors could well play its way, while curtains and blinds will also keep the heat in, as long as they left open during the day to let as much natural sunlight in.
Once of all of these aids to keeping the house warm have been implemented the last and no less important step is to set off on light switch patrols, as often as you need to. Keeping on top of the rest of family members to switch off lights, heaters and domestic appliances whenever they are not in use will not make you too popular with the rest of the family, but you will save money. And when the winter nights are really cold what's wrong with making sure that family all pass the evening in the same room for some family bonding while saving some money.
