Understand The Importance Of Your Electrical Wiring

We all love our electricity and the quality of life that it brings us. All these sophisticated electrical appliances that we have come depend on are powered by electricity, our washing machine, our fridge, our television and our computer to name but a few. Where would we be without them is the question, yet we sometimes them for granted.

What we certainly do take for granted is the miles of electrical wiring that run through the average family home that allows the "juice" to reach these appliances and at the proper speed and power levels. Not that we recommend that we start climbing through the walls and under the floor of your home to wonder at your wiring, but it might be worth learning how a typical electrical wiring system operates, and what lies inside these coloured wires.

The general description of electrical wiring covers many formats, under the heading of routing conductors which carry electricity from their source to the appliance that needs to be powered. Conductors describe are materials that electric current can flow through with very little resistance, with copper being the most commonly used. Conductors that carry electrical current are always covered in an outer sheath of insulation in order to prevent unwanted transfer of electricity which can be very dangerous, When wires are connected the insulation material, which is usually plastic needs to be stripped from the conductor and carefully joined to a properly protected junction box. Conductors can vary by their gauge, from which materials they are constructed, and other more technical factors. All of these wires are identified by colours and marking, and because it is very important to choose the right type of wires to suit each application, only a certified electrical engineer should be called upon to deal with any wiring issues in your home.

When a wiring system has been established it is known as an electrical circuit. Electrical circuits describe a closed course through which electricity continuously flows from the source through what is known as a " hot wire" to a device and returned to the source through what is known as a "neutral wire". Behind the scenes, these wiring systems are working silently, safely to complete a picture. A picture that provides every UK home with the power of light and sound and many other features that make our lives that little bit better.
