You Shouldn't Have to Look Far to Find An Electrician to Trust
Nothing can cause more pressure and upset than when the electric power falls, especially if there are young children and elderly people in the house. When power falls it usually happens in the evening when traffic on the system is at its heaviest, and in nine times out of ten if the problem is confined to the family home, usually a running repair will see power being restored. That's why it's always a very good idea to have at least on powerful torch around in a familiar place where everyone can reach it.
However unless there is someone at home who is a qualified electrician, repairs other than checking for a tripped circuit breaker or a residual-current device (RED), that has fallen in the electricity power box no one should touch the wiring. If a switch is down, it should be possible to identify the area in the house that caused the power to fall, and even a particular appliance that might be shorting, and neutalise it. That should be as far as it goes. If the problem is not solved then it's time to call out the electrician.
Just like you keep a torch or two around in the event of a power failure, you should also keep the number of an electrician that you know and can trust around too. As anyone who has gone into such a situation where they have no power and children crying will remember what a traumatic and expensive experience it can be. Scouring the yellow pages with a torch in your hand should be avoided if at all necessary. Most electricians these days don't do after hours call outs, and you can save a lot of time and tears by making sure that you know of at least one that does.
The truth of the matter is that there are many "so called" electricians who advertise in the local newspapers or "yellow pages" who claim to be electricians and who may be, but in name only, No matter how desperate you are, make sure that you ask to see certificates and accept no excuses. You may be putting your home and family at danger. If the electrician you find is certificated, you should also inquire into minimum call out charges. Just because you have suffered an electrical fault, it doesn't mean that you should be held to blackmail.
