Gas or Electric Ovens – What's Your Choice?
When it comes down to it, eating is a pretty central element in the lives of a typical UK family, and choosing which type of oven on which to cook our food is a major decision that has to be made and should never be taken lightly. There are a few factors that have to be taken into account before deciding, with the make-up of the family and their needs being the principal factors.
There is a simple rule of thumb when it comes to choosing between gas and electricity, and that applies to just about any major domestic appliance that you can find. The rule is that gas appliances are more expensive to buy but cheaper to run, while electric appliances are generally less expensive but cost a lot more to run. That means if you are looking to buy an oven which looks like it will need to cope with the culinary requirements of a large family over a long term, and then you can be more or less certain that a quality gas oven is a much better investment than an electric one.
Although consumers are vulnerable to price increases which can come from any direction, for the foreseeable future, it is unlikely that electricity prices will fall below that of gas. That means that cooking with gas will make for a better bet for those who are prepared to lay out that extra money to buy a gas oven. Those families whose needs will be less should look at the cost of an electric oven and offset it against the cost of electricity to decide if it is worthwhile.
Electric ovens of today come with a host of functions that can include thermal grilling, rapid defrosting and programmable timers.
In terms of oven hobs, gas is almost universally accepted as better for cooking, whereas electric is almost universally accepted as being better for cleaning purposes. Ultimately, whether you decide to go for straight gas, straight electric or a mixture of gas and electric, the oven you require will depend on the type of cook you are. For a solid all-round oven a good choice would be to go for an electric oven with gas hobs. This combination makes for excellent use of the positive characteristics of cooking with both gas and electricity, both versatile to use and reasonably cheap to run.
