Coming Soon: A New Type of LED Light Bulb that won't need Replacing for at Least 15 Years

With all eyes on saving energy, the news that several of the World's light bulb manufacturers are about to launch a new range of light-emitting diode (LED) driven light bulbs that they will last at least 15 year and up to 18 years will certainly capture the imagination of many. Until now LED bulbs have only been available for use in commercial applications as well as in private cars and buses. LED lighting is also used in most modern aircraft.

Recent developments have seen a major reduction in cost, meaning that they are no commercially viable for domestic use also. Those interested in switching to LED bulbs when they come available in the UK within the next few months, should however bear in mind that these bulbs need to be regarded as long term investment as the initial cost will be significant. However the long term saving should be spectacular!

The reason being is that a typical LED light bulb will be capable of providing as much light as a 40-watt incandescent light bulb, while consuming only nine watts of electricity. That’s a saving of 30 watts per light bulb. Do your sums and see how much you will save. The first time that you see an LED light bulb you will be surprised by it's almost porcupine-like design. The bulb's spikes are there to help project the light toward the areas you want to light and has been proven to very effective in providing strong and focused light. Another positive attribute that the LED bulb will bring is that it is completely free of mercury. The companies behind the development of the LED bulb estimate that each light bulb in an average family home will save around £20 a year in energy costs, reducing CO2 emissions by over 9,000 pounds compared to regular light bulbs.

The only barrier that prevents a UK family from rushing out to change their incandescent bulbs to LED is the initial lay out cost are pretty high. Each bulb will cost around £20 each for the standard 9 watt version, and can reach as high as £50 for the 10 watt (100 watt equivalent) super powerful version.

What with the guaranteed cost savings and longevity, switching to LED bulbs have to be something to considered for the future especially as in line with the US government, the UK government seem likely to gradually phase out incandescent bulbs starting from the, 100-watt version, followed by ir 75-watts and eventually forty-watt bulbs will be part of our history by the middle of the decade. So beat the rush and make your commitment to LED bulbs now, and if you do switch to LED don’t forget to keep the receipts, just in case they don't make it past fifteen years.
