How to keep ahead of natural gas prices fluctuations
While it is true that the average UK family has to keep track of their energy costs all year round, it is in the winter when we tend to keep a closer watch on energy costs. The reason being is in the winter energy costs and especially home heating covers a major part of our monthly living expenses and with winters becoming longer and harsher, a rise in basic material costs can cause a family’s budget to run way off course.
While the energy companies, and rightly so, that they have no control over their raw material and are largely in the hands of the oil and gas producing nations for their raw materials, it is still a bitter pill to swallow when the increases pile up one after the other.
So while there is not a lot you can do about controlling the cost of fuel that we need to buy to keep our homes warm in the winter and our water hot all year round, there is definitely something that we can do about controlling the amount of fuel that we use. Let’s say that energy costs are liable to rise by ten percent in the coming year, and then it should be possible for a family to take the necessary steps to reduce their energy consumption by the same amount. You will be surprised how easy it is, and doesn’t mean that you have to sit in the cold and dark to do so.
The first step that needs to be taken, and well before winter sets in, is to invite a heating contractor from British Gas to check the efficiency of your system and have your boiler serviced. This will ensure that it is working at it maximum potential and you would be amazed how much you can save it terms of costs over the year. During their visit they will look out for any gas leaks or fire hazards and you can also can get them to check out to see that all ducts are clear, to allow for a free flow of gas and air.
Taking a look at how well your insulation is holding out and investing in it if need be is always a wise move. The point of the exercise is to set a budget for energy costs for the coming year and sticking to it, irrespective of whether your basic energy costs will rise.
