Some thoughts on which boiler might suit your best for next winter

If you are one of these people who believed till last week that lightning can't strike twice in the same place and that this year's winter can't possibly be as bad as last years, then you are probably sitting in the cold right now pondering your mistake.

It might be too late to do something about it for this winter, but there certainly is no harm in trying. While the energy supply companies may be literarily snowed under, if you make the first moves to find out what will be involved in upgrading your boiler to a level that it will be capable of coping with the demands of what looks like a long and cold winter then in the worst possible scenario you will be ready for the next one!

There are some basic decisions to be made about which type of boiler best suits your needs, with budget and type being the criteria. If you have a limited short term budget, you might choose an electrically powered water heating system and if you want to save money in the long term, then installing a gas powered heating system is definitely the answer.

These days there are three types of boilers available on the market with combi boilers or condensing boilers as they are often known being the most in demand these days. Combi boilers are inexpensive to install, require little space as there is no need for a separate hot water tank, and will supply unlimited quantities of hot water. The downside is that if hot water requires to be drawn to more than one point at the same time, then water pressure will fall proportionately.

For families that need a lot of hot water all the time, then a system (or closed/sealed system) boiler might be a better proposition. They require a lot more space to install than a combi boiler as they have a separate hot water tank. On the upside the water in the tank can be drawn from as many points in the home without any pressure decrease. However once all the water has been drawn, then the tank has to be refilled and reheated.

So make the time to get down to your local British Gas showroom and it might not be too late to have Santa come down your chimney with a new boiler in his sack for you.
