Heating oil prices shoot through the roof as temperatures plummet
After a year or two where some hope continued to exist that using heating oil as an energy source would return to be a tangible proposition have once again gone up in smoke with the news that increases of around 25% are expected within the next few days.
That translates to fuel oil selling at around fifty pence a litre making it by far the most expensive form of energy in the UK at the moment with the UK Consumer Council promising to investigate why the cost of fuel oil should need to jump so much. The increase makes British Gas's recent 7% increase seem so much fairer.
Oil companies have hastened to point out that the increases have become necessary as crude oil prices have continued to increase, with a current price of around $90 a barrel, with even higher prices expected as the cold spell continues.
This increase is bad news for so many as the UK lies in the grip of a freezing early winter cold snap where temperatures could plummet to more than 10° below freezing within the coming days.
Those UK consumers who have stayed with fuel oil as their first choice energy source must be kicking themselves for once again missing the boat. Estimates are that there may be as many as ten percent of the UK householders who refused to see the writing on the wall and who still heat their homes using fuel oil.
Around half of the UK population now uses natural gas to heat their water tanks and fire their central heating, and it looks like the money that they invested to upgrade was worth every penny. Not only is natural gas much cheaper to buy, but it is also exceptionally friendly to the environment.
While crude oil is running out at a frightening pace, estimates have it that there will be enough natural gas to last the World for at least the next hundred years.
The time has come to move on from the dependency on crude oil as a heating fuel and make the break that will not only save lots of money for the UK householder but make the World a much more environmentally friendly place to be.
