Generate your own electricity from a renewable source and get paid for it! Call British Gas 0800 077 4056

An electrical company that pays YOU for producing energy?

It might sound backwards, but this is the innovative thinking
can protect the environment.

In 2008 the Climate Change Act became a law. This piece of legislation commits the United Kingdom to CO2 reductions of 80% by 2050, with a short term goal of 26% reductions by 2020. In addition to the Climate Change Act, the Kyoto Protocol also establishes a reduction deadline and this one looms even closer. By 2012, the UK must reduce its emissions by 12.5% from 1990 levels.

How is the UK going to reach these goals?

One important component to the reduction plan is government support for microgeneration. Microgeneration is the production of electricity by small-scale, and often private, systems. Under the Feed-In Tariff, energy suppliers must make regular payments to households and communities that qualify as microgenerators. This scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated, plus a separate payment for electricity exported to the National Grid.

To encourage participation in this scheme, Feed-In Tariffs are designed so that the average income from the installation will significantly exceed payments on a 25 year installation loan. This consideration ensures that residents can feel safe joining the scheme, knowing that profitability has been carefully planned.

Further ensuring that the scheme is likely to succeed, the Feed-In Tariff provides flexibility. This scheme does not limit participants to one or two forms of renewable energy. Instead, participants can choose from a long list of eligible electricity-generating technologies. These technologies include:

  • Solar electricity (PV)
  • Wind turbine
  • Hydroelectricity
  • Anaerobic digestion
  • Micro combine heat and power

So, with the Feed-In Tariff the UK is one step closer to fulfilling its Kyoto and Climate Change Act obligations. The best part is that regular people, just like you, can take part in increasing the use of renewable energy, while also reducing your own energy costs and even receiving payments for extra energy exported to the National Grid.
