Don't Be a Slave to Opec -
Say Goodbye to your Oil Fueled Boiler

It may be hard to believe but it was only ten years ago that oil was regarded as a reasonable alternative to gas and even electricity as a fuel to heat boilers in the UK home. That was mainly because in those good old days the cost per barrel for crude oil was around $20 a barrel, where today it is almost four times more at around $75. And that sounds even reasonable when you consider that the price of a barrel peaked at $126 a barrel and that was only as recently as June 2008. This means that anyone who made what was an incorrect decision to power their heating mad a blunder that will have cost them thousands over the years. Boilers are not like a pair of socks, you can’t change them whenever you want to, however anyone who has oil fired central heating should be considering around about now to free themselves of the burden of being a slave to OPEC.

Another factor to be taken into account in this decision is a ten year old boiler will already be on a downward slope as far as energy efficiency is concerned and the longer it is allowed to work in its degraded state, the more it will cost to feed. Most oil fired boiler will up between 800- 1000 gallons a year in its most efficient state, and will lose about 5% efficiency annually from its sixth year in use onward. That means with home heating oil now costing around £2.00 a gallon, the price of heating an average UK home is around £2200 annually when it cost maybe £400 or £500 a year when it was first installed.

It wouldn't take a financial genius to figure out that it will be a very worthwhile exercise to replace the existing and increasingly inefficient oil boiler with a shiny, new gas boiler that will be cheaper to run and a lot friendlier to the environment and the cost of installing a new gas boiler will be recovered in just a few short years.
