British Gas looks to the future with smart meters
You don't get to become the UKs largest energy supplier by resting on your laurels. And that is for sure what British Gas doesn't do. As has been their way for decades, BG has looked to the future to find ways to improve their services and make life better and simpler for their millions of clients across the country. Once again they have proved their commitment to the future by investing close to six million pounds in a Cambridge based company of AlertMe, who specialise in the development of a host of systems that deal with energy management.
Particularly outstanding is their range of smart meter monitors for gas and electricity users, either in the domestic of business communities. These meters have been designed and produced to allow the taking of multiple readings on a daily basis. By monitoring their meter readings, consumers will be able to monitor their energy output as well as readily identifying any problematic over use of energy and curtail it.
With plans for every UK home to have some form of smart meter installed by the end of this decade, British Gas's decision to invest in AlertMe shows their commitment to their long goal, with an initial two million smart meters due to be in place by the end of 2012. With an estimated twenty million homes in the UK, the estimated total cost of installing smart meters is expected to be around the seven billion pounds, which BG and their competitors will have to finance.
Meters that have been installed over the last few year use a card similar to ones in a mobile phone to transmit data, a system which fails to allow the consumer to access information on their energy usage in real time.
Smart maters alongside other concepts of smart technology presents some exciting prospects for the consumer.
Alert me's products have the capacity to allow home owners to control their household appliances remotely, allowing them to operate these appliances at low peak electricity rates.
Gas boilers will also be able to be integrated into a smart system where energy is used more efficiently. This will lead to reducing consumption and with it lower bills and less carbon monoxide escaping into the atmosphere.
Thanks to British Gas's vision these dreams are becoming a reality.
