Stop Shale Gas Say Protestors
Shale gas is considered to be a revolutionary and cheaper alternative to combustible fossil fuel like oil and gas especially in the UK. In addition, the fact that it has proven to be a more convenient energy supply than Natural gas did anything but make it popular in the eyes of the British public. Their chagrin had more to do with the way this energy source is extracted than with anything else.
So what has British residents up in arms about this seemingly innocent fossil fuel? The gas itself is locked tight within rocks deep underground and requires a potentially environmentally hazardous extraction procedure called hydrofracking. Oil operators are required to inject one to nine million gallons of forced water (that is also mixed up with a variety of other chemicals) to force out the gas from the “fracks” or shale deep underground. The fact that a single extraction requires such a large body of water and an extensive technological process isn’t economically viable itself let alone environmentally friendly.
Besides that protestors also stress that the use of such a ferocious water pressure is liable to damage the ground it is subjected to. One of the resultant anxieties over the issue also has to do with the fear that the forced water might disturb the natural water course. Public animosity towards the whole affair is also instigated by a fear in the form of a possibly tainted water supply.
The UK might have come across a convenient fuel source when it comes to using shale gas as fuel for gas boilers but an environmentally conscious public begs to differ. Your gas boiler might need plenty of fuel to keep it going, but don’t count on shale gas being one of the options in the UK in the not too distant future.
