What You Should Know About Storage Tank Water Heaters Before You Buy One

Choosing the right water heater for your family's needs can be a bit of a responsibility. However if you make the right choices, you will find yourself not only saving yourself loads of money, but ensuring you have all the hot water you need, and when you need it.

Storage tank water heaters are designed to specific quantities of water and then store in for long periods in a specially insulated tank. Water heaters for insulated tank storage come either in electric or natural gas model powered. The gas powered water heater is more expensive to purchase than the electric heater. In the long term, for families to need to heat a lot of water, then the gas may be a better long term investment, as it is considerably less expensive to operate than the electrically driven one.

Once you have decided which heater best suits your needs, the next step is to calculate which size of tank best suits your requirements, It stands to reason that the larger the tank you buy, the more it costs to heat up, and if the water heated is not utilised then the wastage will be considerable. Another factor that should be taken into account is the frequency of hot water usage. If you are a large family and they all need to bath or shower at the same time, and the domestic appliances need to be operated in conjunction, then you will need to buy a fairly large tank. If you are a few, and you tend to shower at different hours of the day, then the size of your water tank could be a lot smaller. One thing that has to be always taken into account before deciding which tank will best suit is that the water will not remain hot for hours on end, and heating the same water twice will involve unnecessary costs.

Statistics show that the average family needs a 40 gallon tank; however a simple rule of thumb should be applied.

  • A minimum 30 minimum- 40 maximum gallon tank is enough for two people
  • A 40 maximum gallon tank is enough for three people
  • A minimum 40 minimum- 50 maximum gallon tank is enough for four people
  • A 50 maximum gallon tank is enough for five people
  • A minimum 50 minimum- 60 maximum gallon tank is enough for six people

This equation goes on until the maximum size of water tank (80 gallons) is reached, although with some proper logistics you might be able to spread out the intensity of bathing and showering to save such a major outlay. Another very important factor that people often forget when planning their new water storage heater is to make sure that you have the space available for the water heater you plan to buy.
