Why gas is good
There are still a lot of people who remember the good old days of the coal fire and are even inclined to romanticise about them. They remember the good old days when a small and (usually) friendly man covered in a black dust would carry sacks of coal down to the basement. If they happened to is the youngest member of the family they would also be inclined to remember being sent downstairs to bring up a bucket or two on a freezing cold winter's night.
The chances are they might even remember bath night which usually involved standing up in a basin while your mother poured some (close to) boiling water straight of the "range". If you were the youngest member if the family, as well as the one who got sent to the cola, the chances are that by the time that it got round to you turn the water was a lot cooler, but necessarily a lot cleaner.
That's what nostalgia can do, make you forget that life was tough and you didn't have that many options to keep yourself warm and clean.
These days the option to heat a home and maintain plentiful supplies of hot water is many and by far, the most popular form of power these days is gas, and that has been the case for many years. Much as we all miss them, there are no coal men and no more coal dust. Natural gas is piped into your home, so there is no need to store fuel, as the supplies are endless and constant. Somewhere in the background, there will be a condenser boiler working away quietly to keep your family warm and clean.
You would think that with all of these improvements using gas as a power supply would be expensive. What nostalgia makes us forget that coal was expensive and as most families had no other options, apart from burning their floorboards or furniture, they had to pay whatever the coal man asked for or else they would be unable to heat their home and keep themselves clean.
In the 21st century, gas is recognized as being not only the most efficient and user friendly, it is by far and away the cheapest in relation to an average family's income.
So when you hear someone reminisce about the good old days of the family sitting around a coal fire, think yourself lucky that you live in the age of natural gas!
