Winter arrives with a vengeance - are you prepared?
Winter in the UK has arrived and you only need to look out the window to gather all the evidence you need that it looks like being as bad if not worse than last year. While the winter of last year only began to bite in January, we are not even into December and the snow and freezing temperatures are well upon us.
This is the time when people who suffered last winter are looking to be well protected this time around. That means keeping ourselves and our family warm while keeping an eye on costs in an attempt to keep them at a reasonable level. This can only be done by efficiency control by which ever source of energy is used to heat water as well as operating the home heating systems are they centrally operated or stand alone.
That means making sure that thermostats are set to never rise above a certain setting, which is usually around twenty degrees centigrade (48° Fahrenheit) In anticipation of a succession of cold winter nights, it is best to remember that last winter homeowners were observed making the mistake of pushing their thermostat way above this point, with the outcome of pushing their energy bills into a whole new stratosphere.
Another money saver is to only use heating when it is needed. While systems that are left running all day keep the average internal temperature indoors at a pleasant level, there's not a lot of advantage to be gained if nobody is home.
The more that energy use is controlled, the more energy costs will be controlled. Having a timer in place will certainly justify the expense and if the system is set to swing into action around half an hour before the first family member gets home, it will certainly be enough. Of course if there are elderly people or children at home all day then switching off the heating throughout the home may not be an option. However there is no reason not to set up timers individually on each radiator in a central heating system so that each of them is only in operation when they are needed.
All of these actions may seem a little petty, but they need to be adopted to keep costs under control and leave some money in the kitty for Christmas. Only by being prepared can these results be achieved.
