Winter is coming - but it's not too late to make sure your boiler is insured
One of the smartest people I once met used to tell me that what the point of insurance is. "Why live in fear" he told me "Why pay out on boiler insurance, just wait till the thing breaks down, and then get it fixed."
The last time I saw him, two days before Christmas last year he was standing up to his knees in water with a cell phone in his hand, dialing furiously.
What my wet, flustered and not as smart as he thought friend had failed to take into account was that what works in theory doesn't always work in practice. The reason for taking out boiler insurance is not only to allow you to undercut the cost of getting your boiler repaired if and not when it breaks down but also to prevent you having to go through a lot of the inconvenience that it will cause you.
The water boiler is one of the most important appliances that you will find in a typical home, yet one of the least appreciated. It needs to work all year round to provide hot water for the family. If it breaks down, you will soon notice it. And if it breaks down in the height of winter, then you will notice it an awful lot quicker.
With UK winters getting tougher every year, any responsible adult should make doubly sure that their central heating system will be up to its task and that the boiler is properly insured in the event of a breakdown.
Having boiler insurance means that there is a heating professional working for you in the background. These companies know better than anyone else the risks of waiting for something bad to happen and then fix it when it does. Working in conjunction with your insurance company they will arrange to send a licensed heating engineer to your home well before winter sets in to carry out a check on the state of your boiler and suggest any repairs that you should make.
And if your system should experience a problem during the winter; the chances are that the same heating engineer will arrive at your house to carry out the repairs, quickly and efficiently.
That's what my friend didn't want to hear about - he preferred to take the risk. Strangely enough he seems to have changed his mind for this year.
