The winter is dead - long live next winter
Winter at long last is showing signs of abating and when the final analysis will be carried out; there will be a few facts that will need to be absorbed. The first of all is that the global weather scene has changed considerably, and that UK winters are going to be tough from now on in. The second conclusion that will need to be reached is that if anyone found they unprepared this winter had better start thinking about what they will need to do so that next winter won't be a repeat performance. And not in October but in March or April at the latest.
It would be nice to think that all that would be needed to solve the problem of how to keep you and your family warm next winter is to throw money at it. However there are very few UK families that can enjoy that luxury. That doesn't mean that wise investments might not be called for, but ones that will save money in the long term. Enough has been said about the need to renew older boilers, and those who haven't done so yet, are really burying their heads in the snow. Now is the time when boiler prices will be lower and a call to a British Gas to get the ball in motion would be a very wise move indeed.
Install a central heating system is one of the biggest investments a family will make and when you look at the cost it can appear quite frightening. However in energy conscious UK there are loans available that will spread the costs over a long term. This means that the money saved in energy will pay a considerable percentage of the cost, and you have added a fair chunk onto the value of your property. Go all the way and install all the latest controls, which will be capable of controlling different levels of warmth in each room, as well as providing hot water on demand.
Once providing heat has been assured by installing a new boiler, the next step is to ensure sure that the home is being insulated to the maximum. especially potentially drafty areas such as basements or attics. Cold air allowed to enter a property on winter will add considerably to your heating costs and that wise investment in changing your boiler will have been to no avail.
