Are You Moving?
What you need to know about your energy supply
British Gas has worked hard to ensure that their customers receive continuous care and support – even when they are moving between two properties. Here are some of the services that British gas provides, as well as some general information about what to expect during your move.
Your previous property’s gas service will not automatically stop
In order to stop gas service once you have vacated a property you need to call British Gas and provide them with a closing meter reading.
British Gas will forward your final bill
As soon as your new address is secured, you should notify British Gas and they will then forward your old address’ final bill within 14 days.
You may not have gas when you arrive
It is possible that the home’s previous owner will have turned off the gas meter before they left. If you suspect that your gas has been turned off you can call Gas Emergency Services on 0800 111 999. Doing so as soon as you suspect your gas is off will ensure that an engineer can check your supply quickly.
You may have gas from another supplier when you arrive
Once you move in call British Gas and they will be able to tell you if they already supply gas to your new property. If they do, resuming your British Gas service will be fast and easy.
If another provider supplies gas to the property, the process to change to British Gas is still simple, but takes a little more time. Simply inform British Gas that you would like to resume service with them and contact the property’s current supplier to stop their service. Your property will receive gas service from its previous supplier for between 4-6 weeks while the service transfer is being completed.
HIPs
As of 1st August 2007 all homes with 4 or more bedrooms require a Home Information Pack (HIP) in order to be sold in England and Wales (homes with three bedrooms were also included as of 10th September 2007). If you have recently purchased a home meeting these criteria then you should have received your package.
This package includes several important documents, one of which is the property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). Reading this document will tell you about your new home’s level of energy efficiency, it’s CO2 impact on the environment and the typical fuel costs based on its current infrastructure.
British Gas can help you to understand your EPC and can use its information to suggest ways that you can improve your home and save money on energy. Some of the most common solutions deal with improving the home’s central heating, upgrading insulation, and installing alternative energy sources such as solar panels.
