Back Boilers

While back boilers are slowly making their way into the history books, there are many UK homes that still use them, and even a few where circumstances may force them to replace or update an existing back boiler with a new one. The description "back boiler" stems from the fact that the original designs of this traditional boiler were almost always situated in the back of the traditional fireplace, and drew heat from the fire to heat the water.

back boilers

It is an interesting fact that thirty years of more ago, almost very UK home had a back boiler, and nowadays they are few and far between, Back boilers were originally heated by coal or even wood, however later developments allowed them to be heated by gas or even electricity.

The heated water was usually forced by water pressure through a system of pipes to radiators or water tanks that were stored either in the basement or the attic, and were usually plagued with problems water pressure problems.

There are obvious drawback of heating water through a back boiler, and despite advances in technology, they have never really been overcome. Families who still heat their water through a back boiler should look around for other alternatives, although it shouldn't be a total lost cause if none are found.
