Boiler Types

Which boiler is right for your home?

Condensing Boilers - 88% Efficiency

Condensing Boilers are high efficiency boilers, recapturing heat that would otherwise be lost. A favourite with those who want to save on their monthly bills and protect the environment, condensing boilers carry a slightly higher initial price tag, but provide big savings in the end.

Combination Boilers - 75% Efficiency

Combination Boilers activate on demand, which means less wasted energy and no need for water tanks or cylinders. Although not as energy or cost efficient as the condensing boiler, combination boilers do require less of an upfront investment.

Back Boilers - 60% Efficiency

Back boilers are fitted to the back of a fireplace or room heater. These pieces of antiquity need to be replaced in accordance with current UK building codes.

Tips to consider when buying a boiler

What do you want the boiler to produce? Hot Water, High Temperature Hot Water, Low Pressure Steam, High Pressure Steam.

Even though condensing boilers are the most expensive, they are more efficient than other boiler types and in the long term, could save you the most money.

How big a boiler would you require? How much hot water can satisfy the needs of your household?

What will the boiler be used for? Will it be used for space heating, humidification or process steam?

What type of fuel do you have available? Coal, WoodNatural Gas, Fuel oil, or a combination of fuels.

After the boiler has been installed, who will take care of it? This is a critical factor to consider.

Boiler FAQs

How long does boiler service take?

A Gas Safe Registered engineer will service your boiler in approximately 30-60 minutes. Exact time will vary depending on the nature of the service call and the boiler's specific condition.

What is a SEDBUK rating?

SEDBUK stands for the Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers. This is a UK specific rating system used to standardize boiler efficiency ratings. A Rated is the highest rating possible and signifies that the boiler is of top efficiency.

Are there any legal restrictions on what type of boiler I can install?

Yes. In 2005, New Building Regulations cam into force, which mean that most new, or replacement gas boilers must be condensing boilers.

What are some common problems that frequent maintenance can avoid?

One of the most common problems that boiler owners face is an obstructed flueway. Unserviced oil or gas-fired boilers can become clogged with combustion residue (ash, soot, sulphur, etc.) Growing ivy, bramble, and other plants, which will also create blockages, can infiltrate low-level discharge flues.

Blockages such as these can create a very dangerous situation in which carbon monoxide builds up in your home. Since carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless, and tasteless, as well as potentially fatal if too much is inhaled, this is an important situation to avoid.
