Frequently Asked Questions About Meters and Bills
What should I do if I have a question about my bill?
If you think that your bill has an error, the first thing to check is whether you are operating on an estimated meter reading. Next, you should contact your account manager and provide an accurate reading or inform them of the problem. They will investigate the issue and either resend your existing bill or adjust your next one to reflect any changes.
My energy costs have risen, what could explain this?
If your energy consumption has had an unexpected increase, you should first investigate possible reasons. It can be a good idea to take a meter reading every day at the same time for 7 days. Not only will this show how much energy you’re consuming each day, it can also let you know if your meter is faulty.
You may also wish to check the Meter Serial Number (MSN) on the front of your meter and compare this number with the MSN stated on your bill. If the two numbers do not match, contact your account manager.
Also, ask yourself if there are any explanations for the increased energy consumption: have you installed new equipment, added extra staff, or experienced a weather change?
What is the Climate Change Levy?
The Climate Change Levy is a Government-imposed charge that is applied to your Electricity and Gas usage. This levy was implemented to help achieve the UK’s 20% carbon emissions reduction by 2010. Businesses that are charged 5% VAT are not subject to this levy, but many of those that pay the higher VAT rate of 17.5% are. You can avoid paying the Climate Change Levy by choosing British Gas’ 100% Green Electricity option.
How can I learn which contract I’m on and what my current prices are?
Current prices are listed on your bill. If you cannot find the information that you need on your bill, contact your account manager and they will be happy to provide you with all the information you need.
What is an MPAN number?
An MPAN number is a Meter Point Administration Number. This 21-digit number references your electricity supply and is displayed on your electricity bill. What is an MPR number? An MPR number is a Meter Point Reference number. This 10-digit number references your gas supply and is displayed on your gas bill.
What is an MSN number?
An MSN number is a Meter Serial Number. This number is displayed on both your meter and your bill. It is important that these two numbers match; if they do not match, contact your account manager.
