One- off Central Heating and Boiler Repairs

Emergencies and Insurance

Disasters can strike at any moment, and it is best to be aware of the initial steps when confronted with an emergency. The best line of defense is to identify the problem early. For example, if you smell gas:

  • Open the windows
  • Do not switch lights or sockets ON or OFF
  • Refrain from using a lighter or match
  • Check that all gas appliances are turned off
  • Turn your gas off at the meter

Following these steps will prevent a possible fire or explosion in your home.

In the Event of a Flood

If a flash flood occurs and you are not prepared for the affects of a flood, consider taking these actions immediately:

  • Move as many of your belongings upstairs
  • Turn off all electrical appliances
  • Obtain a water pump and begin removing as much water as possible immediately
  • Contact your home insurer to make sure that you have adequate coverage and that they are aware of your situation

Water leaks

If confronted with the undaunted task of dealing with a leaking or burst pipe, turn off the water at the mains stop tap. Also, turn on all taps to drain the system. If confronted with a flooded cellar, make sure to contact your local insurer to inform them of the difficulties you are facing; standing water often stays in your cellar for a long period of time, and as a result can create expensive damages. Make sure you are covered, but most importantly, call a plumber!

Storm or Fire Damage

After incurring severe storm or fire damage, as soon as you are able, make your house secure and weatherproof. Boarding up broken windows and covering your roof will prevent further damage to your home, and potentially make it more salvageable. Your building insurer will be able to provide you with the right advice for your situation. If your house is damaged beyond repair, consider moving to emergency accommodation provided by your local emergency officials.

Know Your Insurance

When disaster does strike, make sure you know what you are insured against. If your home contains damage that will be rectified by your insurers, make notes about the damage as soon as possible. Remember to write when the damage occurred, and the weather conditions at the time.

Photographs can be a great help when dealing with an insurance company. Keep an updated file with pictures of your home and valuables. Then, after damage has occurred, remember to take photos of items that have been harmed. This way, you can then show the insurers what the house or goods were like before you needed to make a claim.

By being prepared for every possibility a home can face, you are taking the right steps forward to being ready when disaster does strike.
