Kids Can Save Energy and Water Too
Everyone’s help is needed to protect the environment and conserve energy. Children and children driven activities are a major consumer of energy in the UK, so it only makes sense that the little ones be allowed to participate in the solutions. Here are some and easy suggestions just for kids.
Ways You Can Help Save Energy
1. Volunteer to be in charge of turning out the lights whenever your entire class leaves the room – such as at breaks. If your classroom has large windows you can even suggest turning out the lights on sunny days if the natural light is sufficient. Not only will this save energy it can also create a calmer learning environment.
2. Offer to help pack your lunches in reusable containers.
3. Walk around your home with a ribbon and hold it up in front of each window. If the ribbon blows, tell your parents that that window is leaking heat.
4. Organize a tree-planting event in your garden or even throughout your neighbourhood and recruit your family and friends to help.
5. Always turn off electrical items after you are finished using them.
6. Start an environmental club at your school. Talk to your teacher and see if they can help.
Ways You Can Help Save Water
Do you know how much water you use in a day? It can be shocking, but here are some ways to cut back and help the environment.
1. It can take 2 to 5 gallons of water just to brush your teeth. Use a cup for water while brushing your teeth instead of running a constant stream from the faucet.
2. It can take 8 to 15 gallons of water to run the dishwasher. Use fewer dishes during the day by reusing your water glass and dirtying only the smallest number of plates possible.
3. It can take 17 to 24 gallons of water to take a bath or shower. Showers use less water than baths, but only if you keep them short. Next time you take a shower try not to dawdle. You can even make a game out of it by setting an egg timer and seeing if you can beat the clock.
4. It can take 35 to 50 gallons of water to run one load in the washing machine. Next time you change into your pyjamas look at your clothes carefully and decide if they can be worn again before being washed. If there are no stains or odours, it likely does not have to be
washed yet.
