Leading By Example:
Reducing CO2 Emissions as you Travel

You do not have to wear a sign or join a rally to inspire others to help the environment. Simply making a few lifestyle changes yourself can inspire others who follow your good example.

Think about it this way – if your efforts inspire just one person a week then by the end of the year, 52 more people will be doing their part to help the environment. The results are even better if their efforts inspire more people, and so on.

So follow these simple ways to reduce your CO2 emissions and start inspiring others – the results will be more dramatic than you have ever imagined.

1. Purchase a Bicycle. You do not have to trade in your car for good, or even ride every a bike everyday to make a difference. Every time you forgo your gas-powered wheels, you will be preventing the release of CO2 into the environment. Moreover, bicycling is one of the most conspicuous ways to tell others “I care about the environment and you should too!” They will care even more once they see the amazing physical shape that biking a few times a week gives you.

2. Use Public Transportation. Depending on where you live, public transportation could be very convenient and even faster than driving (not to mention a great way to save money on gas and parking). Yet do not feel that you have to use it every time you travel, especially when it is not a convenient option. Instead, learn about the destinations that can be easily accessed using public transportation and use it whenever you can. Not only will your efforts reduce CO2 emissions, you will also encourage further development of the public transportation options in your area – the more popular they become, the more money will be invested in upgrading them.

3. Carpool. With a little investigating, you will likely find that some of your colleagues are also commuting from your area or live along your route. By forming a carpool, you will reduce the number of vehicles on the road plus save money by sharing the cost of gas and parking. Forming a carpool can be as easy as posting a notice that asks if anyone is interested; not only will you inspire those who join you each morning, you will likely also inspire people from other areas to form carpools of their own.

4. Make Your Next Vehicle an Energy Efficient One. Next time you’re in the market for a car, focus your sites on energy efficient, electric, hybrid, or bio-diesel options. These vehicles are easier on the environment and by simply driving one around you will inspire others to follow suit.

The changes that you make in your own life can help inspire others in a big way. Becoming an environmentally friendly trendsetter is the best way to maximize your efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.

Remember, it does not have to be difficult to be effective and other people are often more persuaded by what they see you do than by what you tell them.
