Safety When a Service Provider Visits Your Home


The security of yourself and your home is a priority for
British Gas and all Centrica companies. British Gas is committed to superior customer care. When a British Gas service provider visits your home, you should feel confident that you are dealing with a well trained and courteous professional.

Unfortunately, not all companies have the same strong values. Even worse, some criminals fraudulently present themselves as service providers in order to gain access to homes. Although these situations are rare, it is important to take precautions to ensure that you do not fall victim to a crime.

The following are some simple steps that you can take to protect yourself. Even if the visit was prearranged, it is still wise to take this safety precaution.


Ask for Identification

If the service provider does not have appropriate identification or is unwilling to show it, ask them to return at another time. Do not worry about appearing rude, your safety comes first.


Call the Company

If you have not scheduled a visit with your service provider, you should call the company to ensure that they did send an employee. As an added precaution, verify the phone number for yourself rather than using one provided by the visitor.


Have Someone Else With You for Scheduled Appointments

Even if you are certain that the service provider is authentic, you may still feel nervous having stranger in the home. If you feel uncomfortable about being at home alone when a service provider visits, ask a friend or family member to be there with you.

If no one is available to stay with you, or if you find yourself alone in the end, cancel your appointment. Even if you are charged a small penalty, your piece of mind will be worth the fee.


Remain Firm

While you observe these safety precautions, the service provider should be calm and understanding. If they are anxious, irritated, or pressuring you in any ways then you have the right to ask them to leave your home and return at a later date.

If the person is unwilling to leave or makes you further uncomfortable, then you should leave the home yourself, find a phone and call the police immediately.


British Gas Home Energy Care Register

The Home Energy Care Register is one of many ways that British Gas provides exceptional customer service. This scheme is a Priority Service Register for British Gas customers who have particular requirements, such as the elderly, disabled, or chronically sick.

The goal of the programme is to record all special requirements that customers may have, in order to provide personalized and attentive service. One important aspect of this system has been the creation of a password scheme. When British Gas sets the appointment with a Home Energy Care Register member, they also provide an extra security password. This password is used to guarantee that the service provider at the door is an official British Gas representative.
