Solar Energy - A Viable Energy Source for the UK?

Have you seen those strange silver panels showing up all over the UK? Perhaps you noticed one on the roof of a house or maybe you have even seen entire fields full them. These intriguing pieces of technology are a strong sign that solar power is becoming a viable source of alternative energy.

With the Sun's light constantly bombarding our planet with energy, is it any wonder that solar energy may be the future of energy for our world?

What is Solar Power?

Quite simply, solar power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the sun. Solar power is clean, environmentally friendly, and most importantly, a renewable resource. Once only seen on the wings of space shuttles, advancements in technology are bringing solar energy down to earth.

In the world of solar energy, there have been three main ways of producing energy directly from the sun. The first two methods, passive and active solar power, absorb the Sun's heat waves and store it for later use. The third method, photo-voltaic cells, converts sun light waves to electricity.

It is the third method, the capture of the sun's light energy, that is proving to be the most effective and flexible method for solar energy.

Does Solar Power Have a Future in the UK?

Naturally, the question arises whether the UK receives enough sun to make solar energy a practical source. According to some solar energy experts, it appears that the UK does get sufficient sunlight overall, but due to the varying climate in the UK, however, the sun's intensity varies from moment to moment and from season to season.

Initial solar energy technologies were challenged by the British climate, creating periods of weak power or complete shortages while the skies were overcast. Fortunately, recent advancements now allow for light energy to be captured and effectively stored for periods then the sun does not shine. Improved panels are also much more sensitive and able to absorb light energy, even when only small amounts are available. How energy aware are you?

Even with advancements to cope with the UK climate, solar energy expansion is still facing difficulties. For example, solar energy equipment can be difficult to find and expensive to purchase.

A Bright Future Ahead?

As technology continues to advance the cost and availability of solar energy will improve. British Gas is working to be part of the solution by providing affordable solar energy options as part of their CHI package.
